In a world of 7.6 billion people, it’s the only thing that makes us different from one another, yet at times, it seems to be the easiest thing to lose. As busy medical students bogged down with studying almost all day every day, we may forget what makes each of us unique, one of my biggest fears. To counter that fear, one of my absolute favorite things to do is meet new people because with each new person I meet, there lies the opportunity to gain diverse perspectives and hear about his or her experiences. For this reason, I joined the Synapse board. I want to encourage even more people to speak their minds, share their stories, unleash their emotions, and find that inner creative spark that brought them here in the first place. Can’t wait to hear from you all! https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1516323899153-Y7M1A3VTOTO7N022FHQE/image-asset.jpegAbout 2018-2019Alysia Hall, Acquisition Editor I love reading and have since an early age. I enjoy learning from the perspective of the author, whether it’s a work of fiction, a biography, or a poem. Reading allows me to see into their world and to better understand how other people think. I am so excited to be a part of The Synapse to read and to see the submissions from creative people within the College of Medicine. I enjoy hiking, camping, reading, and playing board games in my free time. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1516327292413-0I89MCBXZEA0A7APMPMN/image-asset.jpegAbout 2018-2019Mouctika Paluri, Copy Editor I’ve loved words for as long as I can remember - for me, there’s nothing more interesting than learning the intricacies of a new language or finding new ways to express the thoughts that are always bouncing around in my head. Writing is my favorite way to express my feelings because it’s something I can readily share with friends and family and (hopefully) spark some great conversations as a result. This is the same reason I’m so excited to be a copy editor for the Synapse - my classmates are my family these four years, and giving them a platform to share their experiences is uniquely rewarding and has the potential to form deep and lasting connections. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1516327363606-KWTP54T9RMVG7E8SZCWK/image-asset.jpegAbout 2018-2019Jamie Weihe, Design Editor My love for medicine stems from its ability to inextricably connect science and the humanities. I feel that consciously considering the impact of humanism in our profession allows reflection on the values of human connection and storytelling. I joined the Synapse because of the opportunity to forward these values, and I am excited to work with the Synapse team! I love reading the works of our faculty and students, and I look forward to helping with future editions of the Synapse. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1516323849974-L35O039C5T52617IW7Q9/dsc09805\_24616743037\_o.jpgAbout 2018-2019Mimi Phan, Managing Editor As Hippocrates said, "Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity." As Managing Editor, I am excited to read about the aspects of humanity and philanthropy that drive us all to pursue a career in medicine. I have always loved to read and write, from starting an online blog last year to making poetry in my spare time. I believe that literature, art, and humanities allow for a cathartic release of emotions and different perspectives - and I am looking forward to being a part of the Synapse at Texas A&M College of Medicine! https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1516323932672-TGVF0OK2UWZ7M397FG8W/dsc09813\_27706508329\_o.jpgAbout 2018-2019Ty Fields, Copy Editor I decided to join The Synapse as an editor because I have always had an interest in writing and the humanities. I love exploring the psychological aspects of medicine, from both a patient's and healthcare provider’s view. I’m interested in seeing the work of our colleagues and staff and excited to assist in the creation process! https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1517600659756-OR52VY8NMMCXG3K3F05I/image-asset.jpegAbout 2018-2019Sarah Joseph, Copy Editor One of the most intriguing aspects of our future careers as physicians is the privilege we have in listening to other people’s stories. Through these stories, we often learn about a patient’s medical concerns, but we also often discover much more. In listening to a patient’s story, we learn about their lifestyles, their backgrounds, their opinions, and even the many challenges they face in their everyday lives. Through stories, we are able to obtain the whole picture – we connect concrete disease processes with abstract human qualities. And, it is our response to these stories that enable us to effect real change. This is true power of the written word. It allows us to share stories - stories that move us, inspire us, and stories that change our lives. In writing and reading about such compelling stories, we spread awareness and put new ideas in motion. I joined The Synapse not only because of how much I love stories, but also because of how much I adore new ideas and unique points of view. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to read and share all of your stories soon! https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1516327401265-RGR2BKX9W61D4JQR4RTU/image-asset.jpegAbout 2018-2019Andrew Wang, Social Media Manager I studied biochemistry in undergrad, but I think it was my minor in sociology that really shapes who I am. Growing up in a household of two different - and sometimes clashing - cultures, I love to learn how the backgrounds of other groups of people mold individuals in how they interact with one another. Each of us came from a unique walk of life with our own stories to tell, and that's what I believe the Synapse provides: a place for us to express our ideas and experiences - things that make us who we are. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1517601103937-ID6GJCQ8BW84RGYP6NQH/1481725018214.jpgAbout 2018-2019Dr. Barbara Gastel, Faculty Consultant Hello! I'm Barbara Gastel, a faculty consultant to The Synapse. Having been active in student publications myself, I'm especially pleased to serve in this role. I'm a medical school graduate specializing largely in biomedical writing and editing. I coordinate the Texas A&M graduate program in science communication, teach medical humanities, and participate in projects to help researchers in developing countries to write about and publish their work. In my free time (what's that?), I like to cook, bake, read, travel, attend concerts and plays—and do more writing and editing. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1517601117905-M29Q4KTPTAYH888M8DWA/1481580524574.jpgAbout 2018-2019Dr. Karen Wakefield, Faculty Consultant Soon after its creation, I was honored to become the Synapse Faculty Editor. The Synapse is a medium for medical students and others in the College of Medicine to express their individual creativity in a format that can be read and revisited over time. Each article, poem, or picture opens a window for us to see into the humanity of medicine. In my free time, I enjoy reading, learning about history, cooking, and quilting. http://www.synapsehsc.com/february-2018daily0.752025-03-14https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1518375365271-8HYMJ0IX8BYWGDNIE7VZ/v1.jpgFebruary 2018https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1517874165446-B7LCINGDAQKF72JN17FA/v3.jpgFebruary 2018https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1517524384109-3RX4281YODR6XF5T9LE1/paul-ogden.jpgFebruary 2018Paul Ogden, MD, former vice dean for academic affairs.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1517444605295-UGEP8IHT6GAZBEUS7LCX/Orsi+Submission.jpegFebruary 2018Carolina Orsi, M1, uses her art to relax and prevent stress. I was struck by how our celebration of love so rarely recognizes the vulnerability and messiness of giving your heart away. It’s not the clean and cozy thing Hallmark cards make it out to be, and it leaves the most vital parts of you vulnerable in the open air. Prepping this piece for submission, I enjoyed how this metaphor becomes a reality for some physicians; the kindness, gentleness, and skill needed to love well are also necessary when operating on a patient. The luckiest of us will accept your heart with gentle hands.”https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1581991668633-DUZ9KTDL8R6QCG42YKLW/waer.jpgFebruary 2020Amy Waer, MD, FACS. Dr. Alfredo Jimenez, a cardiologist at Baylor University Medical Center in downtown Dallas, was my sponsor. We discussed recent updates on COVID-19 (in Spanish only) as well as cultural differences in approaching this new pandemic. Dr. Jimenez and I worked together to translate COVID-19 resources that could be of use to Spanish-speaking populations. It was not only a great way to practice my Spanish, but to expand my knowledge of COVID-19 and make healthcare resources more accessible to the Spanish-speaking population.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1587045131530-R30CDO52G8T31GJAQ551/Bare+Bones.jpegApril 2020Created by Cerci Hammons, M1https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1587339083133-1SPA2EFJV7VBAPYWONE3/jeremiah.JPEGApril 2020View from outside one of our clinic sites, overlooking the outskirts of Lima. She wrote that song after meeting a survivor of human trafficking, and in it, she speaks of hope, faith, and the strength of human spirit in the face of injustice and oppression. I was starting my STEP-dedicated study as the beginning tides of COVID started to hit the United States, and this placed me in a unique situation of possibly being one of the very few people whose daily life was not interrupted amidst the pandemic. However, the same does not apply to my mental state. Every day I oscillate between feeling useless as a medical student that’s not allowed to be in the clinic and grateful that I’m being given the opportunity to expand my knowledge so that I’m better equipped to serve people in the future.http://www.synapsehsc.com/june-2020daily0.752025-03-14https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1592878942285-X76S0W5TTRAOZK0UK5XQ/the+future+of+medicine.+jpg.jpgJune 2020“The Future of Medicine” by Dr. Heidy B. By all accounts, we were not. Over six months later, it seems as if there is no end in sight. Throughout this time, I’ve often heard the phrase “this too shall pass” as a desire to return to the normalcy of January. Yet when the pandemic finally ends, I hope that we will have achieved a new normal—one in which we tell each other stories of how hopeless the world seemed … before the coronavirus.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1598112369250-T62JUMK2XNJ0BDF6J9BR/Picture2.pngAugust 2020we didn’t come here for the night life #t-town, Temple M2 Classhttps://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1598113888781-KYTT93TFSN3IWA4L9Y97/Picture3.pngAugust 2020“This picture was taken inside my apartment complex overlooking the Texas Medical Center in Houston.” Photo courtesy of Helen Chen, M3.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1598114424314-Z7KQ3YIYL26PAJQEKML9/Screen+Shot+2020-08-22+at+11.38.07+AM.pngAugust 2020http://www.synapsehsc.com/october-2020daily0.752025-03-14https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603842876190-LA1ATQ20P10280ECAPYM/Hanging+on.jpegOctober 2020“Hanging On” by Heidy Frias, MDhttps://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603295914687-AJYAEWI7JRX0NV4FMUVC/nano+2.jpgOctober 20201st try – I was ecstatic with how this particular illustration came out; it was a simple model, but it had all the elements I wanted to portray. The spherical shape and surface texture are enough to suggest how actual lipids would organize within a bilayer. The white protrusions were meant to represent surface proteins or polyethylene glycols.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603296445129-JBUD07PJTJMF6XFNADIG/nano+4.jpgOctober 20203rd Iteration – I went full tilt with the thicker pills, now looking more pill-like. I ran a fluid particle system simulation to create the random distribution of the pills and was extremely impressed with myself but not quite convinced about the color of the “nanoparticle,” as it gets lost with the red around it. How much lab time was devoted to this, you ask? I refuse to incriminate myself, thank you. Next question.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603296900757-4LDW37VH5RWZRQ2HSNQ3/nano+6.pngOctober 2020Version 2.0 – This will probably be engraved on my tombstone. As I started to discover color harmonies, I settled on one that was extremely bright and started to reflect more accurately the fact that there are different lipids on the surface as well as different protein types.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603333318631-YZXIK4WCNX78XXXJ2W49/Nano+8.pngOctober 2020Screenshot of Blender Software – The software I was using to create the 3D images is Blender, an extremely versatile program for 3D animation. While it is free, it is as complicated as it looks, and it was quite laborious to create an illustration. I wanted to create illustrations that I could use for presentations, conferences, and just general enjoyment. Blender was great, but I had to find something faster.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603333513282-PW2XVX104S5ZY92KCMT4/nano+10.pngOctober 2020Voxel Illustration 1 – The learning curve with this style was less pronounced than it was for Blender. The software I was using is called MagicaVoxel, and it lets me create great images quickly. The “voxel” style was striking, but it did not distract excessively from whatever I was illustrating, which was great for standing out in presentations.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603296281114-7CIG5IIASOU16AP5CGAS/nano+3.jpgOctober 20202nd Iteration – I placed a blue background for contrast, changed some of the colors of the surface protrusions, and placed pills on the background for a reason that I can’t quite recall at this point, but it looks cool, if a little static.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603296733763-QT37272CO0Z8SC6IA3Z6/nano+5.jpgOctober 20204th iteration — I was absurdly satisfied with myself at this point. The shot is perfectly centered, and I changed the color to yellow, which pops a little bit more. To this day, I use this image in presentations and meetings. It turns quite a lot of heads.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603296976568-E3B6MHZXX6S36FLZRPKM/nano+7.jpgOctober 2020Version 2.1 – Annotated illustration. So my scientific illustration skills were finally being put to use, and this was included as a schematic to describe a project that was submitted for a grant application.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603333381258-Y4XE95ZHQ1SFSUSPHUM6/nano+9.pngOctober 2020The answer came to me in the form of little 3D squares. Within the world of 3D animation, there was an illustration style called “voxel illustration,” which is a little bit like pixel illustration but 3D. While I was initially attracted by the look, I eventually found out that this style was less laborious than my previous work with Blender. This style was also attractive to me because I related the voxel to the pixel and the pixel to the basic unit that makes a picture. I felt that nanoparticles were also at that basic level, the smallest particles—just beyond atoms.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603333640655-ADUTIT25YC047LFJNUUJ/nano+11.jpgOctober 2020Voxel Illustration 1.1 – Again, what began as procrastination ended with my learning something that I could later apply toward constructive ends. This was by far one of the proudest moments of my academic career. My paper containing this image was published in the January 3, 2020, issue of Circulation Research, and this image appeared on the cover of that issue.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603333848958-M0V2MKI5ZS8X5QWN657N/nano%2B12.jpgOctober 2020https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603334006322-2HH3N0KPO3SI4Z1NCRNP/nano+13.pngOctober 2020All images by Christian Boada, PhD.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603334028841-G8LM29FM7T1GCXIGUCL4/nano+14.pngOctober 2020https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603335511372-TGJ9AMXWHBKUW5BVQ9ON/image.jpgOctober 2020Photo by Tim Gouwhttps://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603336840007-47VUEZL2VDHSE6RP0G2N/mother+painting.jpgOctober 2020https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603337322232-D12O4TZJOXBCHPB15GMK/image-asset.jpegOctober 2020Photo by Brian Patrick Tagaloghttps://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603338406846-7HO9VE7M6Y4Z7AM6MOL5/mother+nature.jpgOctober 2020Art by Sara Alihttps://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603374806146-6KFGWBM4X4A2A7GEUIRO/image.jpgOctober 2020Photo by Science in HDhttps://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603758222259-L25D27SODX470C146LV7/suicide+prevention.pngOctober 2020https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1603833472922-SCHLXIW6FXJJ33FRZXVW/what+if+i+fall.pngOctober 2020Art by Ksenia Vlassova, M1http://www.synapsehsc.com/december-2020daily0.752025-03-14https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1609171641677-G510Z3QE2SGW6PFDMTGS/Silver+linings.jpgDecember 2020Artwork by Heidy Frias, MDhttps://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1608429358368-6GGZ7SRDS2TV30WHJEVO/Screen+Shot+2020-12-19+at+7.38.28+PM.pngDecember 2020Mark Sicilio, MD. Fortunately, the weather that day was just beautiful! We exchanged some fun stories, sipped on refreshing coffee, and were driving back to campus when spectacular colors poured through the sky as if today God was in a mood to paint such a masterpiece! At the stop, I quickly took the opportunity to snap a picture and marked these lovely shades of the sky in memory forever …. Sunset reflection: Taken on Dec 2, 2020, at 5:20 p.m. on Raymond Stotzer Pkwy and Harvey Mitchell Pkwy S when crossing the lights while coming toward campus.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/1608427266917-ELCUR8ZC1XZD6VLTDPOV/Screen+Shot+2020-12-19+at+7.20.17+PM.pngDecember 2020Goodbye 2020! When I was in FOM (Foundations of Medicine) I, one of my histology lab partners told me that the slides we were looking at were actually very artsy. He said that he would even consider hanging up some of these slides as artwork around his future home. "Nobody would even know that I got them from school." The more I looked at the slides, the more I fell in love with the different color gradients and patterns, which inspired me to try out some new painting techniques. This is one of the recent pieces I made during my study breaks! Joining the Synapse team gives her a perfect opportunity to express her deep love for the humanities, especially reading, writing - and after directing a high school performance of Damn Yankees that, by some miracle, did NOT completely fall apart - theatre arts. If she’s not reading or studying, she’s probably on a nature trail, at a concert, or actively planning her next concert.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/f6373af0-e526-483b-8e76-53b2167f98f5/Dang\_Vy\_2022\_2.jpgAbout 2025Vy is a fourth-year medical student at the Houston campus. She was initially involved with The Synapse as a writer and loved to read the submissions of her peers with the release of each issue. She decided to join the team to be a part of the publication process—acquiring submissions, working directly with other authors, and helping them publish final pieces that they can proudly share. Outside of school, Vy enjoys running, climbing, reading and writing medical non-fiction, and shooting street photography.https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5531e2d7e4b0fcb142ed528a/e4566d43-2ab1-400a-93d4-a869c09592e7/Bauder+-+Abigail+Bauder.jpgAbout 2025Abby is a Medical Sciences PhD student studying immunometabolism in the fruit fly model.
